As Netflix adds a fee for password sharing accounts, how do you get around this issue? Here are five tips to beat the ban.
As the ways in which people consume entertainment evolve, streaming services like Netflix have become increasingly popular. With countless millions of subscribers worldwide, Netflix is a giant in the industry.
However, the company has decided to crack down on password sharing, which has long been a thorny issue. It brings up problems for the other video streaming services too, who will surely start to introduce similar tactics.
Whilst this move is clearly aimed at cutting down on unauthorised usage and to create an additional revenue stream for the company, there are a few methods to bypass the ban and continue sharing your Netflix account with family and friends.
To beat the ban, it’s essential to understand how Netflix’s crackdown works.
Netflix’s ‘ban’ utilises IP addresses and other techniques to determine if users are sharing passwords. Netflix has stated, “A Netflix account is for use by one household.”
The streaming service typically relies on algorithms and user data to identify accounts that are possibly sharing their login credentials.
These algorithms look for any anomalous activity such as multiple logins from different locations or excessive simultaneous streaming.
By limiting the number of people you share your Netflix account with, you can reduce the chances of being detected. Ideally, it would be best to share your login information only with close family members or friends living in the same household as you.
Netflix’s algorithms often identify password-sharing based on the number of simultaneous streams. To avoid detection, coordinate watching times with those sharing your account to ensure that streaming is not done simultaneously.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) masks your IP address by routing your connection through a server in a different location. By using a VPN, you can make it look like your account is being accessed from a single location.
There are numerous VPN services available, some even free, that you can use to circumvent Netflix’s crackdown but know that Netflix is making lists of VPNs to ban.
Meshnet is a free feature that allows you to create encrypted tunnels between devices. The method, referred to as ‘tunnelling’, enables multiple individuals to connect from a single IP address (an internet address that Netflix uses to identify the location of connections).
NordVPN’s ‘Meshnet’ feature allows users to appear as if they are connecting from the same IP address as someone else (for instance, you can be on another continent and seem to be connecting from a friend’s house) and works on devices including Android TVs.
Instead of routing traffic through a VPN server (which changes your IP address to that of the server, which Netflix attempts to block by banning lists of VPN servers), users can, for example, route internet traffic through a TV or laptop at home.
This means that other individuals connected to the same Meshnet will appear to be in the same location.
Important Note: The use of a VPN to bypass ban or similar restrictions may violate Netflix’s terms of service. So proceed with caution.
Lastly, consider upgrading to a family plan. Netflix offers a Premium subscription that allows up to four simultaneous streams in Ultra HD. This is a legitimate way to share your account with family members or friends while avoiding the crackdown on password sharing.
Note that this option is £15.99 per month, and is still really only technically available within the same household, so won’t be for everyone.
Overall, while Netflix may be ramping up efforts to address password-sharing, users can still employ certain methods to continue sharing their accounts. Be sure to check Netflix’s terms of service and consider your actions accordingly.
