Does Prime Day actually have good deals? Don’t get caught up in the Prime Day frenzy! Do your research, compare prices, and focus on your shopping list to get genuine bargains and avoid impulse buys.

Every summer, Amazon throws a massive online shopping party called Prime Day — now in its 10th year. With promises of deep discounts and exclusive deals, it’s a day that tempts even the most budget-conscious consumer.

But before you get swept up in the frenzy, it’s important to ask questions. Like is Prime Day actually worth it? Are the deals all they’re cracked up to be?

We explore the hype and reality of Prime Day to help you decide if it’s worth your time and money.

Is Prime Day worth it?

There’s no denying the allure of Prime Day. For 48 hours, Amazon boasts seemingly huge discounts across a wide range of products. Tech gadgets, TVs and games consoles get slashed in price, homeware always gets a refresh, and even fashion finds see significant markdowns.

This concentrated period of deals can feel like a goldmine for savvy shoppers, especially those with a Prime membership that unlocks free shipping and early access to sales.

Plus, because Prime Day is such a part of the retail calendar, other major stores drop prices too. Argos, Currys, John Lewis, and many more drop prices and offer free next-day delivery codes during Prime Day (nullifying Amazon’s unique selling point), making it worth comparing prices all round.

Prime Day: A marketing masterstroke from Amazon

Skepticism over Prime Day is warranted. Some critics argue that Prime Day has become more of a marketing ploy than a genuine savings event.

Here’s a closer look at some potential drawbacks:

  • Inflated prices: Some retailers (and marketplace sellers) have been accused of inflating prices before Prime Day, making the “discounted” price seem more enticing but not necessarily a true bargain.
  • Limited-time deals: Lightning Deals, Prime Day’s time-sensitive offers, can create a sense of urgency that pushes shoppers to buy impulsively without proper research.
  • Focus on Amazon Devices: Prime Day discounts heavily favour Amazon’s own line of products like Echo smart speakers, Fire TV Sticks and Fire tablets. While these deals can be attractive, they might not be the best fit for everyone’s needs — how many Alexa-infused devices does your home really need?

How to make Prime Day worth it to you

How can you navigate the Prime Day maze and emerge a satisfied shopper?

Here are some tips:

  • Do your own research: Track historical prices of desired items using tools like CamelCamelCamel or Keepa to see if the Prime Day price is truly a deal worth buying. Note these only work for Amazon, and not other sellers.
  • Make a list and stick to it: Don’t get caught up in the excitement and impulse buy. Create a wishlist beforehand and focus on getting deals on those specific items.
  • Compare prices: Don’t assume Amazon has the absolute best deal. Check competitor websites and price comparison website like Idealo or to ensure you’re getting the most bang for your buck.
  • Use hotukdeals: Our community of over 2 million members know a good deal when they see one. So check on your desired items on hotukdeals first, set up an alert or two and you’ll find that bargain you’re looking for. Download the hotukdeals app today from App Store or Play Store.
  • Beware of Lightning Deals: These offers can disappear quickly, and the pressure to grab them before they’re gone can lead to rushed decisions. Research the product beforehand and only buy if it’s a genuine deal.

Do some research

Research is key to finding a good deal. Those Recommended Retail Prices (RRP) are rarely what you’ll actually pay and should probably be ignored. Instead, use price history tools and comparison websites to see the item’s typical selling price and what kind of discount you’re really getting.

Here’s what you should be looking for:

  • A discount deeper than the usual selling price: This could be a Lightning Deal, a steep discount, or an unbeatable offer.
  • Items that are rarely discounted: These might be premium items, limited-edition products, or evergreen essentials.
  • Something nearing the end of its lifecycle? Bigger discounts could be on the horizon for these “mature products” or classics with proven track records.
  • A price that feels right for you: This is your sweet spot, a price you’re happy to pay.
  • Something you actually want and need: This is a necessary purchase, a must-have item, or something that fills a gap in your life.

Prime Day or Black Friday?

Should you buy the deal over Prime day? Absolutely, if you find a Prime Day offer at a good price, go for it! As there’s no guarantee it’ll be that low again in November. Plus, waiting might leave you empty-handed, you could end up paying full price for what could have been a bargain.

Or should you hold off for Black Friday? If your research reveals the item historically dips lowest in November, then you could wait.

If that trend holds, waiting could save you more — a few pounds perhaps but every little helps… But remember, it’s a gamble — Black Friday prices will fluctuate and we’ve seen in recent years that Amazon’s Black Friday sales are often beaten in price by other stores.

Is a Prime membership necessary?

The value of a Prime membership for Prime Day depends on your shopping habits. If you plan on making significant purchases during the event, the free shipping and early access can be beneficial.

However, if you’re a more cautious shopper who prefers to research deals thoroughly, an annual Prime membership fee might not be worth it. Consider taking advantage of the free 30-day trial offered to new members, but remember to cancel before the trial ends to avoid any charge.

If you are aged between 18-22 you can get a 6-month trial of Prime and then half price membership after that, so £47.49 per year.

The verdict on Prime Day

Prime Day can be a great opportunity to bag some genuine bargains, but it requires a strategic approach. By being a well-informed and prepared shopper, you can avoid the pitfalls and make the most of the sales.

However, if you’re not a compulsive shopper and prioritise value over convenience, you might be better off waiting for deals throughout the year or during major sales events like Black Friday. Remember, the best deals are the ones that fulfil a need, not just a fleeting desire.

Don’t forget to visit hotukdeals next week during Prime Day, as there will be hundreds if not thousands of deals posted for Amazon Prime alone.
