Don’t be fooled by fake discounts and scams on Amazon. Here are a few tips on how to prepare for Prime Day and 7 mistakes to avoid.

Next week, Amazon will be launching the tenth Prime Day 2024. It’s tempting to get caught up in the bargain-hunting frenzy. It’s not uncommon to read about 50, 60 or 70% off, or even more. But not all supposedly attractive offers are worth it! That’s why we’ve put together 7 mistakes to avoid on Prime Day 2024.

  • 1. Not getting ready for the event
  • 2. Not comparing prices
  • 3. Falling into the trap of offers that are too good to be true
  • 4. Acting too late
  • 5. Focusing only on Amazon
  • 6. Buying for the sake of it
  • 7. Not taking full advantage of Prime membership benefits

1. Not getting ready for the event

In the run-up to the event, scheduled for 16 and 17 July, think about the products you want to buy. Make a list of the things you really need or for which you’ve been waiting a long time for a good deal. That way, you won’t fall into the trap of unnecessary impulse buying. You can use Amazon’s Wish List function to list all the products you want to buy.

2. Not comparing prices

There’s no doubt about it, in many cases, a lot of great deals are actually on offer during Prime Day. But just because thousands of items are discounted during this event doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all cheaper than elsewhere.

Use price comparison sites such as Idealo to compare prices. Thanks to price trends, you can also check whether an item was offered at a higher price just before Prime Day, and then benefit from a particularly large discount. One of my favourite tools is the Keepa browser extension. This allows you to see price changes over time directly from the product page on Amazon.

3. Falling into the trap of offers that are too good to be true

During major promotional campaigns such as Prime Day or Black Friday, many scammers are on the lookout for new victims. Using particularly large fake discounts, they try purely and simply to steal your money. You can recognise genuine offers by the official Prime Day banner on the product page. Make your payments exclusively via the Amazon platform itself and don’t fall for offers that seem too good to be true.

4. Acting too late

Whether it’s an OLED TV for several hundred of pounds less or a smart watch for the lowest price ever, the best Prime Day deals often come in the form of flash offers. If you know that a particularly good deal is going to go live at a particular time, make sure you’re quick. The best deals can expire in a matter of minutes. So set an alarm, or a reminder, and make sure you’re logged in so you can jump on the good deal as soon as it appears!

5. Focusing only on Amazon

There’s no doubt that during Prime Day, Amazon offers its members a wide range of deals on its own products, so you’ll be able to pick up plenty of bargains. But many other merchants are taking advantage of the Prime Day craze to launch their own offers during the same period. The good thing is that my Prime members aren’t the only ones who can take advantage!

So keep an eye out during Prime Day week for the likes of Currys, H&M, Steam and others. And keep an eye on hotukdeals for great deals!

6. Buying for the sake of it

Have you missed out on a great deal or is the item you’ve been waiting for not on sale? If so, avoid making the mistake of buying something just for the sake of it during Prime Day, just to have bought something. And if you still want to treat yourself, set yourself a budget that you won’t exceed.

7. Not taking full advantage of Prime membership benefits

Make the most of your Amazon Prime membership and all the benefits available to you. From free games on Prime Gaming, to a free Kindle Unlimited trial and free delivery, Amazon is offering a host of extra benefits on Prime Day 2024 that you shouldn’t overlook. Check out our Prime Day 2024 guide for all the exclusive Prime offers for the event.

We hope these tips for avoiding Prime Day mistakes will help you get a great deal on 16 and 17 July! From experience, we know that Amazon products such as Kindle, Fire TV and Echo speakers are always offered at low prices on Prime Day. If you’re not sure whether a deal is worth its price, take a look at hotukdeals and check out the great deals posted by our community.
