Cancelling your Virgin Media contract amid new changes is easy once you understand the steps. Do it before 31 October to not incur a fee.
Navigating the cancellation of any service can be tricky, and this especially rings true for broadband, TV and mobile provider Virgin Media, which some customers find particularly challenging to disentangle from.
Here’s a quick guide illustrating how to cancel a Virgin Media subscription, especially considering the recent changes in annual cost surges.
Recently, Virgin Media announced changes in their broadband bill calculation. The telecom giant will now adjust your costs in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI), plus an additional 3.9% from April next year.
Previously, the increase varied depending on the type of plan you had and the market conditions. Virgin Media will employ the RPI figure from February to calculate your annual price rise, effective from April.
If these changes are displeasing, it’s worth noting you can cancel your package anytime before 31 October, 2023, without incurring cancellation fees.
Cancelling a Virgin Media subscription requires you to provide a 30 days’ notice if you’re on a rolling monthly contract or leaving after the minimum fixed-term contract period.
If you’re still within the minimum fixed-term contract period, which spans nine, 12, 18, or 24 months, and decide to cancel, you might incur charges for any outstanding line rental or monthly costs till the end of the contract term.
Termination fees for broadband will depend on your package and the remaining duration of your contract. Additionally, you might need to return the router depending on how long you’ve used it.
In the scenario where you’ve paid in advance, Virgin Media might refund you for unused services. However, phone and TV usage from your last bill, like call charges or movie rentals, would subtract from the potential refund. Generally, they will issue a refund as a cheque around 35 days after account closure.
Should your cancellation be due to subpar broadband speed, Virgin Media, adhering to Ofcom’s code of practice, may not charge you. However, you will have to consult with Virgin’s technical support team for this process.
If your contract is over, you can haggle down your current provider, switch to another service, or potentially lower your bill by questioning if you truly need the speed you’re on. Using price comparison websites can be a helpful step to identify cheaper deals.
Cancelling your contract given the new changes is a manageable process once you understand the required steps and timings. A combination of good communication and comparison research can guide you through this decision with minimal stress.
