The iPhone SE 4 is shrouded in mystery, with rumours suggesting a design overhaul and significant upgrades. As speculation mounts, the tech community eagerly anticipates official confirmation from Apple. Here’s what we’ve found out so far.

The iPhone SE series has carved a niche for itself with its compact form factor and powerful performance at a competitive price. While Apple has yet to officially confirm an iPhone SE 4, rumours and speculations have been swirling around the tech world.

Due to the fluid nature of rumours and the tendency for conflicting reports, piecing together a clear picture of the device remains challenging. We’ve found all the rumours for you.

Design overhaul

The latest third-generation iPhone SE, Apple’s most compact offering, takes its design cues from the iPhone 8, featuring a 4.7-inch screen. It stands out as the sole iPhone model to retain substantial bezels and a Touch ID Home button.

One of the most persistent rumours surrounding the iPhone SE 4 is a dramatic departure from its predecessors’ design. According to CNET, the compact form factor with a physical Home button is expected to be replaced by a larger, edge-to-edge display akin to the iPhone 14 series, plus it is rumoured it will include a 6.1-inch display. This redesign would also necessitate the inclusion of Face ID, replacing Touch ID.

While this transformation could potentially broaden the SE’s appeal, it might alienate existing fans who prefer the smaller form factor, especially since the cancellation of the short-lived Mini range (iPhone 12 and 13).

Following the iPhone 15 series’ switch to USB-C from Lightning, the iPhone SE 4 is likewise predicted to feature a USB-C port. While the iPhone 14 boasts a dual-lens camera setup, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to maintain a more cost-effective single-lens camera, potentially equipped with the 48-megapixel main lens found in the iPhone 15, as mentioned by TechRadar.

Despite the iPhone SE 4’s design being inspired by the iPhone 14, it’s believed that Apple will employ the same rear chassis manufacturing technique used for the iPhone 16 for the SE 4.

Additionally, Apple might introduce a multi-function Action button on the iPhone SE, taking the place of the mute switch. This Action button, initially introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro models, is set to become a standard feature across all of Apple’s flagship devices by the time the iPhone SE 4 launches.

Display and camera upgrades

In line with the potential design overhaul, the iPhone SE 4 is rumoured to feature an OLED display, a significant upgrade from the LCD panels used in previous models. This could result in improved colour accuracy, contrast, and overall visual quality.

There may be a notch, rather than the more expensive Dynamic Island, which means it will be the only iPhone with this feature going forward.

As for the camera system, expectations are for a single-lens setup much like the previous SE, although there’s speculation about a high-resolution sensor similar to the 48MP main camera found in the iPhone 15, featured in a MacRumours article.

Performance and release date

Given Apple’s history of equipping SE models with flagship-level processors, the iPhone SE 4 is likely to be powered by a top-tier chip. This would ensure smooth performance and compatibility with the latest iOS features. It’s said to feature 8GB of LPDDR5 memory, an A18 chip, and an aluminium chassis, according to Mashable.

However, the release date remains uncertain. While some reports suggest an early 2025 launch, others point to a potential delay until later in the year or even early 2026.

Price

Due to all the changes in design and improved processing power, the iPhone SE 4 will be a bit more expensive than its predecessors, but hopefully still under $500. In the UK, we should expect it to cost around £450-£500. Tom’s Guide suggests that the starting price will be anywhere between $499 and $529 in the US.

It’s important to approach these rumours with a degree of scepticism. The tech industry is rife with speculation, and details about upcoming products can change rapidly. While the iPhone SE 4 promises to be an exciting addition to Apple’s lineup, concrete information is scarce at this time.
