The PS Portal, Sony’s new handheld device, launches in November 2023, streaming PS5 games over home Wi-Fi. Is it worth £200?
Sony has excitedly announced that the highly anticipated PS Portal, previously introduced as their Remote Play handheld for the PS5, will officially grace the gaming market on 15 November, 2023.
PlayStation aficionados have been eagerly awaiting more news on the PS Portal since its initial announcement, and now we have a few more titbits of information.
The release date confirmation, which arrived overnight, also served as the launchpad for the initiation of pre-orders in select countries via Sony’s storefront, PlayStation Direct. The company has stated that pre-orders will also become available at other retailers come 29 September.
The PS Portal, for those who’ve not kept up, is a handheld gadget crafted with the express purpose of streaming gameplay directly from the PS5 over home Wi-Fi.
The PS Portal is perfect for those instances where the television is engaged by another house member or if you wish to transplant your gaming session from the living room to the confines of your bedroom or elsewhere in the home… The device’s 8-inch LCD screen facilitates gameplay continuity, ensuring that you don’t miss a beat.
The PS Portal is set to retail at £199.99 in the UK. And while some might find this a bit steep, given its high-end functionality, it’s unlikely to prove ruinous to your bank account.
All the features that make the DualSense controller so loved by users, such as its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, are integrated into the PS Portal, ensuring no sacrifice is made on gameplay quality.
The question regarding the PS Portal’s battery life has sparked heated debates among gamers recently. Despite whispers suggesting it may deplete after a scant few hours of play, Sony assured CNET that it envisages the device to possess similar battery resilience to that of its DualSense controller.
Although individual accounts vary, this could extrapolate to an average lifespan of between four and twelve hours. Past experience finds us leaning more towards the lower end of this spectrum.
Given that the PS Portal is tailored to be used at home, often as a secondary screen when the television is already in use or for upstairs gaming ventures, a monstrous battery capacity might not be a requirement. The question is, what would your ideal battery life be for such a device?
