The Ally X offers a noticeable performance boost thanks to doubled RAM, but the core processor remains unchanged. This raises questions about whether the price hike is worth it for those satisfied with the original Ally.
Asus is back with a revamped version of its popular handheld gaming PC, the ROG Ally X on 22 July. Launched just over a year after the original, this iteration promises improved performance and a better display, but at a significantly higher price point of £799.99.
The Ally X boasts a brighter, higher refresh rate screen, making gaming experiences smoother and more visually appealing. While the core processor remains the same AMD Z1 Extreme, the doubled RAM to 24GB noticeably enhances performance. This is particularly evident in demanding games, where the extra memory can make a significant difference.
However, the question remains: is the upgrade worth the hefty price increase? For those who found the original Ally lacking in performance or screen quality, the Ally X undoubtedly offers a compelling upgrade path. The increased RAM and improved display can elevate gaming experiences to new heights.
But for those who are satisfied with the original Ally, the jump to the Ally X might be seen as excessive. The core processor remains unchanged, and while the RAM boost is appreciable, it might not justify the extra cost for everyone.
Ultimately, the decision to upgrade to the ROG Ally X comes down to individual priorities and budget. If performance and display quality are paramount, the Ally X is a tempting option. However, if cost is a primary consideration, the original Ally still offers a solid gaming experience.
As yet, no offers on the Ally X can be found, but that is normal considering it’s brand new.
But there are deals on the first ROG Ally, which has come down in price quite a lot from its starting price of £599. In fact, online retailer Very has a good offer for the handheld — down to £431.10 using the code VTQ8Z at checkout. Down from £479, so you’ll be saving around £50.
