Mark your calendars shoppers! As Black Friday 2024 is coming again in November, this annual retail extravaganza is a shopper’s paradise, offering deep discounts and incredible deals across a wide range of products.
The date of Black Friday always falls on the first Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, which this year is 29 November. While Thanksgiving is a US holiday, Black Friday’s impact transcends borders, prompting global retailers to launch sales around the same time.
Black Friday dates in 2024
It’s important to distinguish between Black Friday itself (the date) and Black Friday sales (the promotional period). Nowadays, Black Friday sales can encompass the entire week (Black Week), sometimes beginning in earnest the preceding weeks — but Black November hasn’t got quite the same ring to it.
Amazon Prime Day (normally early October): This exclusive event for Prime members offers a sneak peek at Black Friday deals, with some discounts lasting throughout October and November.
Early Black Friday Sales (throughout October): Many retailers jump the gun and launch early Black Friday deals throughout October. Keep in mind, some of these offers might be just as good (or even better) than the official Black Friday price.
Black Friday sales: Traditionally, Black Friday sales were limited to a single day. However, in recent years, the sales period has expanded significantly. Many retailers now offer early Black Friday deals in the week or whole month before, leading up to the main event. Black Friday is on 29 November in 2024.
Cyber Monday: On the Monday following Black Friday, Cyber Monday has become another major online shopping day with its own set of deals, traditionally electronics.

Why is it called Black Friday?
The exact origin of the term “Black Friday” is unclear.
Some theories suggest it refers back to the Gold Rush, others to the Great Depression, with some thinking it is when stores finally make a profit (“going into the black”) after a year of operating at a loss. Another theory suggests the heavy traffic and congestion associated with the massive shopping day.
But what we do know, is that you can get some serious bargains during November and even the end of October.
The Black Friday sales are often the biggest sales of the year, including the Boxing Day sale in the UK, as more and more shops and online retailers slash prices, ready for Christmas presents and more. The ‘Holiday season’ in the US starts with Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which is now encroaching the UK market too!
Major retailers like Argos, Currys, Amazon UK, and John Lewis all participated, to name but a few, offering competitive discounts throughout the Black Friday weekend and actually the few weeks leading up to it!
There were more than 6,700 Amazon deals posted on hotukdeals in the month of November, 2023 — and the hottest deal of the year was for an exclusive invite-only offer chance to bag a 55-inch Amazon Fire TV for just £150! (Only a few people were able to buy one for this price, but it shows that Amazon is leading the pack when it comes to innovative ways to get people excited during Black Friday).

Black Friday can be overwhelming with so many stores competing! But to help you find the best deals, here’s a list of retailers known for deep discounts across various categories and when they usually take up Black Friday deals:
Amazon: Often the cheapest for almost anything! Amazon usually starts its Black Friday sales after October’s Prime Day, toward the start of November this year.
