The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 was officially launched in France on 26 July 2023. The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra have not yet been released, but they should certainly be unveiled, and then available for pre-order, from 10 July at the Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event.

Design

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, Ultra and 6 come in different sizes to suit individual user preferences. Here’s a detailed look at the dimensions and weight of each model:

  • The Galaxy Watch 7 has dimensions of 40.4 x 40.4 x 9.7mm for the 40 mm model and 44.4 x 44.4 x 9.7mm for the 44 mm model.
  • The Galaxy Watch 6 has similar dimensions of 38.8 x 40.4 x 9.0 mm for the 40 mm model and 42.8 x 44.4 x 9.0 mm for the 44 mm model.
  • By comparison, the Galaxy Watch Ultra measures 47.4 x 47.1 x 12.1 mm, weighing in at 60.5 g. It is considerably larger and heavier than the Galaxy Watch 6 and 7.

The choice of materials used to build the cases also influences the overall weight of the watch.

The Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch 6 use aluminium for their cases, while the Galaxy Watch Ultra opts for a titanium case. This difference contributes to the variations in weight between the models. Aluminium is particularly appreciated for its aesthetic appeal and its ability to withstand everyday wear and tear. Titanium, on the other hand, is renowned for its robustness and superior durability.

In terms of colours, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 remains sober and will be available in Cream, Silver and Green. The Galaxy Watch Ultra is more ambitious, and should be released in the following versions:

  • Titanium Grey with Orange strap
  • Titanium Silver with Black strap
  • Titanium White with White strap

The Galaxy Watch 6, released in 2023, is sold in Cream and Graphite.

Performance

The new Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 and Ultra are equipped with the Exynos W1000 processor. The Galaxy Watch 6, meanwhile, uses the previous-generation Exynos W930 processor.

Each model comes with 2GB of RAM, essential for multitasking and responding quickly to user commands. This generous capacity allows users to switch easily between applications without compromising the watch’s overall performance.

The storage capacity of the Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, Ultra and 6 varies to meet the needs of storing digital content and applications. Here’s a comparative overview of the available options:

  • The Galaxy Watch 6 offers a basic 16GB storage option, ideal for most users who need to store essential apps and data.
  • In contrast, the Galaxy Watch 7 and Watch Ultra double this capacity with 32GB, which is suitable for users with larger storage needs for their personal media and files.

Operating system and sensors

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, Ultra and 6 feature the Wear OS 5 operating system in combination with Samsung’s One UI Watch 6.0 user interface. From a previous generation, the Galaxy Watch 6 runs Wear OS 4, with One Ui Watch 5. Here’s a look at the specifics of these systems:

  • Wear OS: Developed by Google, Wear OS is designed to offer extensive compatibility with Android applications and seamless integration with Samsung devices. Its interface provides intuitive navigation, making it easy to access applications, notifications and essential settings directly from the watch.
  • One UI Watch: One UI Watch is a software ‘overlay’ specially optimised by Samsung for the Galaxy Watch. The interface features customisable dials, interactive widgets and quick settings. As a result, users are able to personalise their experience according to their individual preferences.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, Ultra and 6 are equipped with a range of sensors that enhance their everyday usefulness. Here are the main sensors available on these models:

  • Heart rate sensor: Essential for continuously monitoring heart rate, allowing users to track their fitness and heart health.
  • Accelerometer and gyroscope: Used to detect movement and measure physical activity, providing accurate data for tracking steps, calories burned and types of activity.
  • Barometer: Used to monitor changes in altitude and local weather conditions, ideal for outdoor activities and personal weather forecasting.
  • Ambient light sensor: Automatically adjusts screen brightness according to surrounding light conditions, ensuring optimum visibility at any time of day.

Resistance and standards

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 7, Ultra and 6 are designed to withstand a variety of environments thanks to their certifications and resistance standards.

  • IP68 certification: The IP68 standard guarantees protection against dust and continuous immersion in water to a specified depth. This means that Galaxy Watches can be worn during outdoor activities and in the rain without fear of damage from water or dust.
  • Some Galaxy Watch models also meet military durability standards (MIL-STD-810G), making them resistant to shock, vibration and extreme environmental conditions.
