Possibly.
Anyone who lives in a rural area will tell you that it can be so hard to get a decent internet connection in the countryside that you might as well be on one of Elon Musk’s rockets being fired into space.
There’s a genuine agony in being sent back to 1998 internet speeds in 2023 just because you live a little bit off the beaten track. In the age of working from home and with some of the greatest entertainment ever made at our fingertips, being offline simply isn’t an option.
But Starlink, which is powered by SpaceX satellites and operates in 53 countries around the world, may be ready to step up and fight the good fight against endless buffering.
Starlink makes a big deal of the fact its connections are high-speed and low latency (a fancy way of saying there won’t be delays to the internet connection), but it doesn’t come cheap.
It’s pretty expensive if you’re comparing it to normal high-street internet deals. £70 per month is going to sting a bit, but for many people who work from home in a rural area, or just want to be able to watch Netflix without the wrong kind of drama, it may well be worth it.
The set up costs are usually quite painful and can run to £300 plus, but those are also being reduced to £99 for a limited time offer.
It’s still the kind of amount that will require a sharp intake of breath before clicking, but if Starlink really does deliver the kind of reliable, fast broadband it claims then maybe it’s an investment in not smashing routers into walls every few months.
Starlink is offering a free 30-day trial and that may a good way to put it through its (virtual) paces.
Give it a tough run for a month of streaming, video calls, gaming etc and see whether Starlink can hold its own. If so, then maybe it’s worth putting your trust in those SpaceX satellites.
Starlink’s Rural UK Limited Time Offer Hardware for £99 High-speed, Low-latency Internet for £75 per month (+£20 Delivery Fee).
